Are hardwood or softwood pellets better for a pellet stove?

Most people assume hardwood wins, because hardwood firewood clearly outperforms softwood in an open fireplace. Pellets flip that logic on its head. Once wood is ground, dried, and compressed under thousands of pounds of pressure, the resins in softwood species — pine, fir, spruce — release more BTUs per pound than oak or maple. So a bag of premium softwood pellets often throws more heat and leaves less ash than a comparable hardwood bag.

The density edge that hardwood firewood enjoys largely disappears once everything is squeezed to the same pellet density. That's why a lot of the hottest-rated pellets on the market are softwood, and why the folks who chase maximum output tend to lean that way.

What actually moves the needle

Ash content and moisture matter more than the tree it came from. Premium pellets run under about one percent ash; standard grades run higher, which means more frequent burn-pot scraping and hopper cleaning. Your stove's manual usually names an acceptable ash range — follow it. Some stoves are tuned to run cleanest on a particular pellet; others are happy with anything premium. Start with what the manufacturer recommends, then try a couple of brands and see which burns cleanest in your machine.

Honestly, the hardwood-versus-softwood argument is a smaller deal than pellet quality and how you keep them dry through a damp Western North Carolina winter. Both burn well in a good stove.
