Are manufactured fire logs like Duraflame safe to use in a fireplace or insert?

Where wax logs belong — and where they don't

A manufactured fire log is sawdust bound with wax, engineered for open masonry fireplaces: one log on the grate, wrapper lit at the arrows, then left alone until it's done. Used that way, they're clean-burning and predictable. The trouble starts when people treat them like cordwood — stacking two, tossing one onto a hot wood fire, or poking a half-burned log to "spread the flame." Break the shell and the melted wax inside pools and flares, and a fire that was designed to stay small and steady suddenly isn't.

Inserts and stoves play by different rules

A sealed firebox concentrates heat in ways an open hearth never does, which is why most wood insert and wood stove manuals either ban wax-based logs outright or hedge them with restrictions. A wax log burning hard inside a closed insert can push the unit toward overfiring, and disturbing one mid-burn releases the liquid wax all at once against the glass and firebox walls.

Some manufacturers do allow 100% compressed-sawdust logs — the dense, wax-free kind — which behave much more like very dry firewood. The distinction matters, and the manual is where you find it. If yours is long gone, call us with the brand and model and we'll help you run it down.
