Are there special safety considerations for running ventless gas logs on propane?
Yes. Ventless logs put all combustion products into the room, and propane sinks — so a leak pools at the floor instead of rising and clearing. On LP you need correct orifices and pressure, a working ODS shutoff, honest room-size sizing, and the same rule stands: never in a bedroom or bathroom, and never as your only heat.
Why propane raises the stakes
Ventless (vent-free) logs already ask a lot of a room — the damper stays closed so nearly all the heat stays inside, but so does the water vapor and every byproduct of combustion. That's a fair trade in a correctly sized space with the ODS (oxygen-depletion sensor) doing its job. Propane changes the math in one important way: it's heavier than air. Natural gas rises and dissipates; a propane leak settles low, along the floor and down into a basement or crawlspace, where it can build up unnoticed. The rules don't loosen on LP
Everything true of ventless logs on natural gas is still true on propane, and then some. Room-size Btu limits matter — bigger isn't better, and an oversized vent-free set in a small room burns oxygen and dumps moisture faster than the space can handle. They're restricted or prohibited in some jurisdictions and applications, bedrooms and bathrooms in particular. Add propane's floor-pooling behavior and low-lying LP detection becomes essential. The set has to be built or converted for propane with the right orifices and pressure; run a natural-gas log set on LP and it over-fires and soots, which fouls the very ODS that's supposed to protect you.
Our honest take
We install vent-free sets, and on propane we do it carefully — correctly sized for the room, converted to LP with the manufacturer's kit, tested, and paired with a CO alarm. But we'll say the same thing at the counter that we say on every ventless page: if there's any doubt, direct-vent sidesteps the whole conversation. A sealed direct-vent unit burns propane behind glass and vents combustion straight outside, so moisture, byproducts, and the heavier-than-air worry never enter the room.
