Are ventless fireplaces really more efficient than direct vent fireplaces?
On paper, yes — a vent-free unit is rated 99.9% efficient because every Btu stays in the room, while a direct-vent unit gives up some heat out its pipe. But that number only measures heat retention. It ignores what else stays inside: water vapor and combustion byproducts. Ventless wins the spec sheet; direct-vent is the better answer for most homes in practice.
What 99.9% efficient actually measures
The vent-free efficiency number is real — a unit like Superior's 36-inch vent-free fireplace is rated 99.9% because, with no flue, there is nowhere for the heat to escape. But efficiency ratings answer exactly one question: what fraction of the fuel's energy stays in the house. They say nothing about whether everything else the flame produces should stay in the house with it. By that same logic a candle is 100% efficient. The rating is honest; it's just narrow.
What the spec sheet doesn't show
