Can a gas fire pit stay outside all winter?

Yes — an Asheville gas fire pit built and plumbed correctly is meant to live on your patio all winter, and our 2,134-foot cold isn't the problem. Water is: rain and snowmelt that pool in the burner, freeze, and rust it. Because our showroom sits right here on Emma Road, we see these pits year-round — cover it, keep it draining, and it winters fine.

Hard-piped in town, not tanked

Across Asheville — Montford, North Asheville, West Asheville, Biltmore Village — most permanent pits we install tie straight into the home's natural-gas line rather than a propane tank. That changes winterizing: there's no cylinder to haul to the garage. You simply close the shutoff valve we set at the pit and leave the line be. Running that gas to your patio is licensed work — the crew who laid your pavers legally can't make the connection in North Carolina, but we can, and we permit and pressure-test it with Buncombe County.

What our freeze-thaw actually does

Asheville doesn't stay frozen; it seesaws. A damp 50-degree afternoon drops into the 20s overnight well into early spring, and that back-and-forth is what wrecks an uncovered pit. Water trapped in the burner pan expands as it freezes, then corrodes the igniter contacts, so come April the pit sparks but won't catch. Keep a fitted, breathable cover on it, make sure the pan drains instead of holding a soaked bed of media, and the cold nights become a non-issue.

A midwinter look while you're close

Since we're headquartered minutes away on Emma Road, an off-season check is easy — pick a dry day, pull the cover, confirm nothing's pooling, and relight it for a minute. If yours is a portable tabletop unit rather than a built-in, bring it indoors; those aren't made to sit out. Questions on a specific pit, or want to see one at the showroom? Call (828) 545-0525.
