Can a gas fireplace be installed on an interior wall?
Absolutely — a direct-vent gas fireplace on an interior wall is one of the most common installs we do. The vent runs up through a framed chase and out the roof, or gets routed over to an exterior wall, so you're not limited to outside walls at all. It costs a bit more pipe and framing, but that placement freedom is exactly what direct-vent was built for.
How interior-wall venting works
On an outside wall the vent goes straight out the back — easy. On an interior wall, the coaxial pipe instead turns and climbs inside a framed chase up through the ceiling, the attic, and out the roof, or it runs horizontally within limits to reach an exterior wall. Direct-vent systems are made to do exactly this, within the manufacturer's rules on total vent length, rise, and number of elbows. We map the path before we cut anything so the run stays inside spec and the fireplace drafts the way it should.
What the interior run adds
Going interior isn't free — you're paying for more vent pipe, a chase to hide and protect it, and the framing and finish work to build that chase. It also touches your roof, which means flashing and a proper termination up top. In an older Asheville home with a finished attic we sometimes route to a sidewall instead of fighting the roofline — we'll tell you which is cleaner. None of it is exotic; it's just more material and labor than a punch-straight-out sidewall job. Interior-wall placement is what makes the dramatic installs possible — a fireplace as the room divider, a media wall with the TV above, a hearth centered on the wall you actually see when you walk in, not wherever the outside wall happened to be.
