With 80-plus inches of rain a year cracking crowns, spalling brick, and rusting dampers, we won't run a wood insert's liner up a flue we haven't proven sound. Once it's right, that insert turns an open masonry firebox into an overnight, grid-independent heater.
Rain is hard on Transylvania chimneys
Brevard gets weather most of WNC doesn't — a wet season from March into June and 80-plus inches a year that works on masonry relentlessly. Crawl spaces and chimney chases here are especially prone to moisture damage, and that shows up as cracked crowns, spalling brick, and rusted-through dampers. So before anything else, we inspect the chimney and crown. If water has gotten into it, we address that first and waterproof what needs it, because we're about to depend on that flue.
The liner that makes it safe
A wood insert vents through a full stainless liner run to the very top of the chimney. That's what lets it draft properly and burn cleanly, and it's required by the manufacturer's listing and by code. We pull the Transylvania County permit and meet the inspector on site — one accountable company for the inspection, the liner, and the appliance, so nothing falls through a crack between trades.
Cabin heat that ignores the grid
Brevard runs from downtown homes to cabins tucked up the mountain, much of it propane country off the gas main.
