Can an indoor fireplace unit be installed outdoors?
No — an indoor-rated fireplace can't legally or safely go outdoors. Indoor units aren't built for weather, moisture, and UV, and their safety listing is void the moment they're installed outside. Doing it also voids the warranty, fails inspection, and can jeopardize your insurance. Outdoor spaces need appliances specifically listed for outdoor use.
The listing is the whole point
Every fireplace we sell is tested and listed for a specific use — indoor or outdoor. That listing is what the code, the inspector, and your insurer rely on. Install an indoor unit outdoors and it's no longer being used to its listing, which makes it a code violation and voids the manufacturer's warranty in one move.
This isn't a technicality we can wave off. If something goes wrong with an appliance installed outside its listing, coverage — both warranty and homeowner's insurance — can evaporate. We won't put our name on that install.
What the weather actually does to it
Beyond the paperwork, indoor units simply aren't built for the elements. Rain and our mountain humidity corrode the burner and valve, moisture works into control boards and igniters, and UV degrades finishes and gaskets. An indoor gas fireplace that would run for decades inside can start failing in a season or two outdoors.
Outdoor-listed appliances use corrosion-resistant materials, sealed components, and weather-rated finishes for exactly this reason. It's engineering you can't fake with a cover.
The right way to get the look
The good news: there's an outdoor-listed version of nearly everything. We carry outdoor gas options — from linear fireplaces to a fire pit like the Napoleon Uptown — that are built to live on your patio year-round, plus mason-built outdoor wood-burning fireplaces fitted with an outdoor-rated gas log set.
