Can I burn manufactured fire logs like Duraflame in my wood fireplace or insert?
Use manufactured wax-and-sawdust logs like Duraflame only in an open wood-burning fireplace, one at a time — never in a wood stove or insert. They're built for open hearths; in a closed, airtight stove they can overfire, and they aren't meant to be stacked or burned alongside real wood. Never break one apart or add a second — follow the wrapper.
Where they belong
Manufactured logs — the wax-and-compressed-sawdust kind like Duraflame — are made for one place: an open, traditional wood-burning fireplace. Used there, one at a time, right out of the wrapper, they light easily, burn a few hours, and make less creosote than a poorly built wood fire.
They're a legitimately convenient option for an occasional cozy evening. The catch is that they're designed to be burned exactly as the package says and nowhere else.
Not in a stove or insert
Do not burn wax fire logs in an airtight wood stove, a wood insert, or a catalytic stove. Those appliances control combustion air tightly, and a wax log can burn hotter and faster than the stove was tested for — an overfire risk — while the wax residue can foul a catalytic combustor.
The wrapper on nearly every brand says fireplace use only, do not use in a wood stove, and they mean it. Same goes for stacking: never burn two at once, never add one on top of a real wood fire, and never poke or break one apart to make it burn faster. Breaking the log releases all the wax at once and flares.
They don't replace maintenance
One honest caveat we give customers: burning clean manufactured logs does not mean you can skip the chimney. Any flame up a flue leaves some deposit, and a fireplace that only ever burns wax logs still needs an annual inspection and sweep on the CSIA and NFPA schedule.
