Can I buy a fireplace online and just pay someone to install it — is that cheaper?
It usually looks cheaper on the screen and lands about the same — sometimes worse. The internet price skips the correct venting components, freight-damage risk, warranty support, and the fact that in North Carolina only a licensed gas contractor can legally connect that unit to fuel. Most of a fireplace project's real cost is the installation side no matter where the box came from.
Where the online 'savings' evaporate
The unit you find online is rarely the whole appliance. Direct-vent fireplaces need the right termination kit, vent sections, and trim for your specific wall or roof route, and those pieces are usually priced separately — get one wrong and the job stalls while the correct part is tracked down. Freight damage is common with glass-fronted appliances, and when a unit arrives cracked, you're the one negotiating with a distributor three states away. Manufacturer warranties can also hinge on professional installation and proper venting — worth reading the fine print before you commit. We see homeowners weekly who saved a few hundred dollars on the box and gave most of it back before the first fire was lit.
The install side is where the money always was
Whoever installs the unit still has to run venting, frame and finish the wall, and connect fuel — and in North Carolina, that last step is licensed work. A handyman legally can't run or extend the gas line to your new fireplace; we can, and we permit and pressure-test every line we run. Many installers also price customer-supplied equipment higher, because they're taking responsibility for an appliance they didn't select and can't vouch for. And if a part fails in year three, a dealer-installed unit gets real warranty support; an internet unit often becomes an argument about who's responsible.
The fair comparison
Price the whole job both ways before deciding. When you tally the online unit plus vent kit plus a licensed gas connection plus a permit against a single dealer-installed quote, the gap usually shrinks to little or nothing — and the dealer route comes with one accountable company standing behind the appliance, the venting, the gas line, and the workmanship.
