Why dealers don't take trade-ins

A used firebox is a used unknown. Warped baffles, hairline cracks in castings, tired gaskets, degraded refractory — none of it shows in a driveway photo, and all of it matters when the thing is holding fire inside someone's living room. Add in the fact that codes and EPA certification requirements have moved on since most old stoves were built, and there's simply no responsible way for a dealer to warranty and resell them. That's why you won't find a trade-in allowance line on anyone's hearth quote — the old unit has no value to us except as metal.

What the old unit is actually worth

Scrap yards pay by weight, and even a genuinely heavy cast-iron stove brings pocket change relative to a fireplace project. Some folks list old stoves online instead — occasionally a pre-EPA unit finds a buyer for a hunting camp — but understand what you're selling: an uncertified stove that a licensed installer can't put back into service in a home, and that a buyer's insurance company won't love. We see this weekly in older Asheville homes during replacements: the discovery that the old unit's real value was the space it was occupying.

Old builder-grade prefab fireplaces are even simpler — they're sheet metal boxes with no resale market at all.
