Black Mountain, North Carolina

Can I keep a Victorian or antique fireplace look while adding a modern insert?

Yes. Black Mountain and Montreat are full of older arts-and-crafts and cottage homes whose fireplaces are the heart of the room, and an insert protects all of it — the stone, the mantel, the hearth — while adding a sealed, efficient fire behind a period front. Natural gas serves much of the valley, and Buncombe County permits the work.

Homes worth working around, not tearing out

The character homes of downtown Black Mountain, Montreat, and Ridgecrest weren't built for a modern firebox, and that's the point — the original masonry, the summer cover, the hand-set stone are the reason people love these houses. A self-contained insert lives inside the existing opening, so none of that leaves. We work within the old masonry rather than rebuilding it, and the finished fire looks like it belongs to the house.

Cold mornings the Swannanoa Valley is known for

Temperature inversions pool cold air in this valley, and mornings can run 10 to 15 degrees below Asheville with late spring frosts. That makes real output matter: an open masonry fireplace can run a net heat loss, while a sealed gas insert commonly runs 70% efficient or better and, with battery-backup or millivolt ignition, keeps throwing warmth when the power drops. A framed matte-black or bronze front and cast logs keep it period-correct.

Licensed gas, Buncombe permit, minutes away

Connecting or extending a gas line is licensed work in North Carolina — a mason can build a gorgeous surround but legally can't fuel it. We pull the Buncombe County permit, pressure-test the line, size the liner, and meet the inspector. Call (828) 545-0525; Black Mountain is 15 minutes east of our Emma Road showroom.
