Can I put a wood mantel above a linear gas fireplace?
Yes, but clearance is everything. Linear gas fireplaces throw real heat above the glass, and every model specifies a minimum clearance to a combustible mantel — often more than people expect, sometimes requiring extra height, a heat-deflector shield, or a non-combustible mantel. We follow the manufacturer's mantel chart to the letter so your wood mantel won't scorch, discolor, or char.
Why linear units are stricter
A traditional fireplace sends most of its heat up and out the front; a linear gas fireplace pushes a wide sheet of heat straight up the wall above the glass. That rising heat is exactly where you'd want to put a mantel, which is why these units come with detailed clearance-to-combustibles charts — minimum height above the opening, and often a maximum depth the shelf can project at a given height.
Ignore it and the wood above discolors, dries, cracks, and in a worst case chars. This is one of the most common mistakes we correct on media-wall projects: a beautiful beam mounted too low, already yellowing.
Your options for getting the look safely
You have three good paths. One, mount a real wood mantel at the model's required height — sometimes that's higher than the eye first wants, but it keeps the wood safe and can look intentional on a tall media wall. Two, use the manufacturer's heat-management kit or a concealed non-combustible deflector, which some linear units offer to reduce the required clearance so the shelf can come down.
Three, use a non-combustible mantel that looks like wood — there are convincing concrete, cast, and wood-look products that carry no clearance penalty. We'll tell you honestly which fits your unit and your wall.
