Yes — swapping the doors or screen front is one of the easiest, most affordable fireplace refreshes, and it makes a surprising visual difference. Dated brass or a cloudy glass door can be replaced with a matte-black, bronze, or clean modern front sized to your opening. It's often a same-visit job with no surround work required.
The fastest facelift there is
The front of the fireplace does a lot of the visual work, and a dated one — polished 1980s brass, a scratched or fogged glass door, a bent mesh screen — ages the whole room. Replacing just that front is quick, affordable, and doesn't disturb the surround, the mantel, or the firebox.

Doors vs. screens — and matching them to the firebox
Not every door fits every firebox, so the type matters. Masonry wood-burning fireplaces take glass doors or a mesh screen sized to the opening; the glass door also cuts the draft an open fireplace loses up the chimney when it's not in use.
Prefab and zero-clearance fireplaces need a front made for that specific unit — you can't just bolt a universal door onto a factory-built firebox. Gas fireplaces have their own clean-face and framed front options, and going frameless is a big modernizing jump on a gas unit.
Getting the fit — and clearances — right
The reason we like to size these in person is that the opening dimensions, the mounting, and — on any burning appliance — the clearances have to be correct. A too-tight or wrong-mounted door isn't just an eyesore; on a gas or wood unit it affects how it operates.
