Yes — with the right gas unit you can. Many fireplaces we install carry Wi-Fi or app control and thermostat operation, so you can start it from the road or set it to hold a temperature and walk into a warm cabin. It has to be the appliance's built-in feature, though; you can't safely bolt remote control onto just any firebox.
How the remote-start units actually work
The units that do this cleanly have electronic ignition and a receiver built in. Majestic's IntelliFire Touch app, Napoleon's controls, and similar systems let you light the fire, adjust flame, and set a thermostat from your phone as long as the cabin has Wi-Fi. Pair it with a smart thermostat and the fireplace holds, say, 62 degrees on its own — no standing pilot burning between trips, and it lights the moment you tell it to.
What it can't do — and the honest limits
Two cautions. First, this is a gas-appliance feature, not a gadget we retrofit onto an old firebox — the ignition, valve, and safety interlocks have to be designed for it. Second, remote start only works when the cabin has power and internet. If a storm has knocked both out, a battery-backup ignition unit still lights by hand at the fireplace, which is the setup we push for mountain cabins that lose power. Electric fireplaces app-control easily but are dead in an outage, so we don't lean on them as a cabin's real heat.
