Can I use regular landscaping rocks or river stones in a gas fire pit, or will they crack and pop?
No — never put river rock, landscaping stone, or ordinary gravel in a gas fire pit. Those stones hold moisture in tiny pores, and when the burner heats them fast, the trapped water flashes to steam and they can crack, spall, or pop violently. Use only rated media: fire glass, lava rock, or ceramic logs made for the heat.
Why the wrong rock is dangerous
This isn't a fussy warranty rule — it's physics with real consequences. River stones, pea gravel, and most decorative landscaping rock are dense and non-porous or, worse, porous enough to soak up rain and dew. Heat them quickly and any trapped moisture turns to steam with nowhere to go, and the stone fractures. In a gas pit that can mean a sharp pop and a fragment thrown out of the pan while you're sitting a few feet away.
Smooth, water-rounded river rock is the worst offender precisely because it came from water and holds it. Keep it in the garden bed, not the fire.
What actually belongs in the pan
Rated media is engineered to take repeated, rapid heating and cooling without failing. Lava rock is naturally porous but formed by fire, so it vents heat safely and tolerates the cycling. Fire glass is tempered to handle the temperature swings and won't burn or discolor for a long time. Ceramic-fiber log sets are cast for exactly this duty.
All three do the same job — conceal the burner and spread the flame — while the landscaping-store lookalike simply isn't built for it. If a stone wasn't sold specifically as fire-pit media, assume it's unsafe.
Get the media matched to the burner
Beyond safety, the right media matters for how the fire looks and how the burner breathes — the wrong fill can smother ports or trap gas. When we install a fire pit, we spec media rated for that unit and set it at the correct depth so you get a clean, even flame and no surprises.
