Cold valley, backup heat that matters

The Swannanoa Valley's temperature inversions leave Black Mountain mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, and this corner of WNC learned during Helene's multi-day outages that a working hearth is real heat when the grid is down. A millivolt or battery-backup gas unit keeps throwing warmth without power; a wood stove needs no power at all. Electric fireplaces, by contrast, go dead in an outage — we'll tell you that plainly.
