What's actually happening
Inside the tank, propane sits as a liquid and boils into gas to feed your appliances — that boiling pulls heat from the liquid and the tank walls. On a very cold day with a lot of gas flowing, the tank can chill faster than the outside air rewarms it, and the vaporization rate falls. Add a low tank — less liquid surface to boil from — and it can't keep up with peak demand. The result looks like a 'frozen' system: low pressure, weak or dying flames, appliances cutting out. A little 100-lb cylinder or a near-empty 120-gallon tank pulling a furnace and a fireplace at once during a single-digit cold snap is exactly where you see it. Above-ground tanks are more exposed to the frigid air than buried ones. A regulator or line problem can mimic the same symptoms, which is why guessing isn't the answer — that's a licensed diagnosis, not a DIY fix.
How to prevent it
Three moves. Keep the tank fuller in winter — more liquid means more surface boiling off and steadier pressure, so don't drift below a quarter to a third. Size the tank to your total load, not just barely; adding a fireplace to a busy small tank may mean going bigger. And consider a buried tank at high, exposed, bitter-cold sites — underground it stays warmer than the air and vaporizes more reliably.
