Spiders are drawn to an odorant added to gas that smells like their prey; they spin webs inside the pilot tube and burner orifices over summer, and come fall the pilot won't light or burns lazy and yellow. Prevention is mostly annual cleaning.
Why spiders love your burner
It's not a fluke or a dirty house — it's chemistry. The odorant (mercaptan) added to natural gas and propane so you can smell a leak happens to mimic an insect pheromone, and small spiders follow it right into the pilot orifice and gas tubes, where they spin webs. One web is enough to starve the pilot of gas or bend its flame off the sensor. What a clogged pilot looks like
The symptoms all point the same way after a summer sitting idle: the pilot won't light, or it lights and then drops the moment you release the knob; the flame is a lazy yellow instead of a crisp blue; or the logs start throwing soot they never used to. Those are classic starved-orifice signs. If your fireplace worked fine in April and sulks in October, spiders and dust are the first suspects, not a dead appliance.
Prevention that actually works
Keep the glass front and lower louvers installed so bugs have a harder time getting in, and run the fireplace now and then during the off-season to keep gas moving through the ports.
