Can you drywall over a brick fireplace?
Yes, you can frame and drywall over a brick fireplace for a smooth, modern wall — but drywall paper is combustible, so it can't run right up to a working firebox. You keep a non-combustible surround (tile, stone, or metal) at the opening and bring the drywall in around it, honoring the listed clearances. On a decommissioned fireplace there's more freedom.
Two very different situations
Whether you can drywall over brick depends entirely on whether the fireplace still runs. If it's a working wood or gas fireplace, the firebox stays exposed and a non-combustible surround frames the opening; drywall can cover the brick field beyond that clearance line but never the heat zone itself. If the fireplace has been fully decommissioned — no fuel, no fire, opening sealed with a non-combustible cap — then you have much more latitude to frame out and drywall the whole wall for a flush, modern look. Framing over brick
Drywall doesn't go on brick directly — you build a stud or furring frame over the masonry, then hang and finish the board on that. This is how a dated brick wall becomes a clean painted plane, or the base for a floating mantel or a media wall. The trade-off is depth: the wall bumps out a couple of inches, and on a working fireplace the framing itself has to stay outside the firebox clearances, since studs and drywall are both combustible.
The clearance we won't skip
On any live fireplace, the manufacturer's or code clearance to combustibles is the line that governs how close framing and drywall can come to the opening — and a non-combustible surround bridges the gap. Getting that wrong is a fire and insurance problem, not just a cosmetic one, so we set the firebox and clearances first and let the drywall follow.
