And propane is heavier than air, so it pools right in the burner bowl waiting for a relight. Turn the pit off at the key valve every time you walk away; it takes two seconds to relight when you're back.
Why 'it's just gas' doesn't hold outdoors
Your indoor gas fireplace has a flame-sensing system that slams the gas shut the instant the flame is lost. Most outdoor fire pit burners don't — they're match-lit or spark-ignited, with a manual key valve and no electronics watching the flame. That's fine while you're sitting there, because you are the flame sensor. Walk away, and a blown-out burner becomes an open gas line. On propane — which is what most pits run out in Fairview, Candler, Brevard, and the cabins — the escaping gas sinks and pools in the burner bowl and media, and the next spark or relight can produce a genuinely violent flare.
Mountain wind is the wildcard
Anyone who's spent an evening outdoors in WNC knows the wind here doesn't ask first. Ridges and valleys funnel gusts that arrive with weather changes, and the downslope breeze that kicks up after sunset can snuff a flame that was rock-steady at dusk. A pit that 'never blows out' has just never met the right Tuesday. Set the pit up so shutting off is effortless
Good installation makes the safe habit the easy one. When we build a gas fire pit, the buried, outdoor-rated line is permitted and pressure-tested, and we place the key valve within reach of the seating — not around the back where nobody goes. Safety accessories like wind guards and automatic shutoff options are worth discussing at the quote stage. End-of-night routine: key valve off, tank valve closed too if it's a portable propane unit, and the cover goes on only after the rim is cool.
