Venting a gas insert up through an existing masonry chimney is one of the most common installs we do, especially converting a tired wood-burning fireplace to clean, efficient gas. But here's the key: we don't vent the modern gas appliance into the bare masonry flue. We run new, correctly sized listed liner up through that flue to carry the exhaust — and, on a direct-vent insert, a second liner to bring combustion air down. Your old chimney essentially becomes the chase that houses the new venting.
Why the bare flue won't do
An old masonry flue was sized for an open wood fire — it's big, rough, and cold. Feed a small, efficient gas insert's exhaust into that oversized cavity and it can't build draft; the flue sits like a plug of cold air, exhaust cools and condenses, and you get poor performance, soot, and moisture attacking the masonry from the inside. A right-sized stainless liner fixes all of it: proper draft, a sealed path, and protection for the chimney itself. That's why "vent it through the chimney" always means "line the chimney," never "use it as-is."
Inspect first, then line
Before we run anything up a masonry chimney, we inspect it — condition of the flue, tile, crown, and clearances, plus whether it's straight and sized to take the liner. Occasionally we find a chimney that needs repair before it can safely carry a liner, and we'd rather know that on day one than mid-install. Once it checks out, we size and run the liner, connect the insert, pull the county permit, and meet the inspector. It's our lane end to end.
