A tight new build in South Asheville holds heat that a plaster-walled Montford house sheds all night, so two identical rooms can land on very different BTU targets. Which Asheville you're heating
Sizing charts assume a middle-of-the-road climate and a reasonably sealed house, and Asheville rarely gives us either. North Asheville and Montford are full of original-masonry homes with lath-and-plaster walls, little to no wall insulation, and windows from another era — heat walks straight out, so those rooms want more capacity than the floor plan alone suggests. The newer construction spreading through South Asheville is a different story, sealed tight enough to size toward the lower end. We read the house in front of us, not an average.
Elevation and mountain glass
Our 2,134-foot perch runs colder than the 'moderate' climate the formulas were written for, so the baseline target already climbs before we factor anything else in. Many West Asheville and North Asheville hillside homes also trade a wall for a big window to catch the ridgeline view, and glass is where heat leaves fastest — a room wrapped in it needs a stronger appliance than a boxed-in room the same size. Pane count, orientation, and how much of the wall is glass all move the number.
