Do electric fireplaces need a dedicated circuit or can they plug into a regular outlet?
Most plug-in electric fireplaces run on a standard 120-volt household outlet — no dedicated circuit required — but there's a catch: at full heat a typical unit draws around 1,500 watts, which is most of what a 15-amp circuit can carry. Plug it into a circuit already loaded with other things and you'll trip breakers. Larger 240-volt built-in models do need their own dedicated circuit.
The 1,500-watt reality
Nearly every plug-in electric fireplace we display — the Dimplex IgniteXL Bold 50 is a good example — runs on ordinary 120-volt house current and pulls roughly 1,500 watts, about 12.5 amps, when the heater's on full. A standard 15-amp circuit tops out around 1,440 watts of continuous load once you leave headroom, so that fireplace basically wants the circuit to itself. Run it on flame-only mode with no heat and the draw is tiny — just the LEDs. But on a cold night with the heater cranked, sharing that outlet with a space heater, a hair dryer, or a microwave on the same circuit is how you nuisance-trip the breaker.
Plug-in is easy; hardwired built-ins are their own animal
For a plug-in unit, no dedicated circuit is required by code — you're just using an appliance cord like a toaster. Our only real advice is to give it a receptacle that isn't already busy, and never run it through an extension cord or power strip; those aren't rated for a continuous 1,500-watt heater and they're a genuine fire risk. Larger recessed and built-in electric fireplaces, especially 240-volt models, are a different story: those are hardwired and do need their own dedicated circuit, which means bringing in a licensed electrician to run it. Sizing the expectation, not just the circuit
Worth saying plainly: an electric fireplace is supplemental heat. At about 5,000 BTU it warms a room up to roughly 400 square feet and takes the chill off — it will not heat your house, and it goes dead the moment the power does. In an outage it's a dark box, which is why we're honest with WNC customers that electric is the wrong pick if backup heat is the goal; gas or wood is the answer there. But for a rental you can't run gas to, a bedroom, or a condo where venting isn't possible, a plug-in electric on a good outlet is clean, simple, and instant.
