Do gas fire pits come in both natural gas and propane models?
Yes — gas fire pits come in both, and many burner kits are convertible between the two. Propane is the more common out-of-the-box version because portable pits run off a hidden cylinder; natural-gas pits connect to a permanent line. For a built-in patio pit, we hard-plumb whichever fuel your home has and permit the line.
Two fuels, two typical setups
Fire pits split along how they're fed. A propane pit — like Napoleon's Uptown square gas fire pit — is designed to run off a tank: either a 20-pound cylinder hidden in the base or an enclosure, or a hard line from your home's propane tank. A natural-gas pit runs off a permanent gas line teed from the house. The burner, pan, and media — lava rock, glass, or logs — are largely the same; the orifice and regulator are matched to the fuel, and a lot of quality burner kits include both orifices so they can be set either way.
Portable convenience versus permanent flame
The tradeoff is real. A propane pit on a cylinder is flexible — you can place it anywhere on the patio and move it — but you're swapping or refilling 20-pound tanks, and one lasts only a handful of hours on a big burner. A hard-plumbed pit, on natural gas or off your home's large propane tank, never runs dry mid-evening and never needs a tank hidden nearby. For a pit you'll use often, we usually steer folks toward a permanent line. Running that line is licensed, permitted work — outdoor-rated and buried to code — and that's our lane.
Made for mountain evenings
Even in July, WNC evenings cool off once the sun drops behind the ridges, so an outdoor fire feature earns its keep most of the year here. If you're on the Asheville or Hendersonville main, a natural-gas pit means never touching a tank. Out in propane country, we can tap your existing house tank so the patio pit and the fireplace share fuel. Let's plan it at a free in-home assessment. Call (828) 545-0525.
