A whiff at startup is normal — a steady smell isn't
A gas fire pit that's working right doesn't smell like propane while it burns. You might catch a brief whiff in the second or two between opening the gas and the burner catching — that's a little unburned fuel before ignition, and it's normal. Once the flame is established and steady, the gas is being consumed, and there shouldn't be an ongoing propane odor. If there is one that lingers the whole time it's running, something's off and it's worth paying attention to rather than tuning out.
What a persistent smell is telling you
Propane and natural gas are odorless on their own; the rotten-egg or sulfur smell you notice is an odorant — mercaptan — added specifically so leaks are easy to detect. So a persistent propane smell while the pit runs means unburned gas is escaping, whether from a loose fitting, a partially blocked burner that isn't lighting fully, or a supply issue. The safe response is the same one we give for any gas smell: shut it off, don't hunt for the source with a flame, and if it's strong, step away and call us.
