Do gas fireplaces affect indoor air quality?

A properly installed gas fireplace has little to no effect on your indoor air, but the type matters. A sealed direct-vent unit pulls combustion air from outside and pushes every byproduct back out, so nothing enters your room. Ventless (vent-free) models burn inside the room and do release water vapor and trace combustion gases into your air.

The venting is the whole story

With a gas fireplace, indoor air quality comes down to one thing — where the exhaust goes. A direct-vent unit is sealed: a fixed pane of glass closes the firebox off from your room, and a coaxial pipe pulls combustion air in from outside and pushes exhaust back out the same pipe, through a sidewall or the roof. Nothing the fire makes ever touches the air you breathe. That's why direct-vent is our default for a bedroom, a tight new-construction home, or any house with an asthma sufferer in it. Napoleon's Ascent 36 and Heat & Glo's 6000CLX both work this way. If clean indoor air is the goal, a sealed direct-vent fireplace is about as close to invisible as heat gets.

Where ventless changes the math

Vent-free (ventless) fireplaces are the exception. They burn with no flue at all, which is exactly why nearly all their heat stays in the room — but so does everything else the flame produces. They carry an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts the gas off if room oxygen drops, they have room-size Btu limits, and they're restricted or prohibited in some jurisdictions, bedrooms and bathrooms in particular. Sized right, installed right, maintained, and run as supplemental heat with a window cracked in a tight home, a ventless unit is safe. But if anyone in the house has breathing trouble, we steer toward direct-vent and take the question off the table.

Vented logs, and keeping any gas fire clean

Vented gas logs sit in the middle — they burn with the damper open, so their byproducts head up the chimney like a wood fire. Decorative-first, not an efficient heater, but easy on your indoor air. Whatever type you own, annual service is what keeps combustion clean. Our classic Western NC failure is spiders and dust clogging the pilot assembly and burner orifices over the off-season, which fouls the flame and can cause sooting — usually a dirty burner or a wrong-fuel setup, not a design flaw.
