Mills River, North Carolina

Do I need a permit to run a new gas line for a fireplace in North Carolina?

Yes — many Mills River homes sit on large rural lots served by propane, and running a line for an indoor fireplace or an outdoor gas fire pit still needs a Henderson County permit, a pressure test, and an inspection. Buried outdoor lines and propane connections are licensed work just like any other.

Propane on the farmland, and the fire pit question

Mills River is open valley — farms and forest, large lots, and a lot of homes on propane rather than a gas main. The wide setting is perfect for outdoor living, and gas fire pits are a common request here, ideally planned in late spring before entertaining season. What surprises people is that an outdoor gas line is every bit as licensed as an indoor one: it has to be outdoor-rated, buried to spec, sized for the burner, and pressure-tested. None of that changes because the fire happens to be outside. The Henderson County permit covers it, and we meet the inspector.

Setting up propane the right way

On a propane system, the tank belongs to your supplier, but the piping, the regulator, and the appliance setup are ours as the licensed contractor. Propane burns hotter per unit than natural gas, so the line pressures and burner orifices have to be dialed in — a wrong-fuel setup soots the logs and wastes fuel. Whether the run feeds a fireplace inside or a fire feature on the patio, we size it, connect it, and prove it holds pressure before anything's lit. We coordinate the tank with your propane supplier and handle everything downstream of it.

We're about twenty-five minutes south of our Asheville showroom. A permitted, inspected line protects your homeowner's insurance and gives you an accountable party if anything's ever wrong — an unpermitted one does neither. Call (828) 545-0525 and we'll scope the run, indoor or outdoor, during a free in-home assessment, and we'll tell you honestly what the site allows before quoting.
