Why linears bake the wall above them

A traditional fireplace concentrates its heat over a three-foot opening. A linear unit like the 50-inch Napoleon Vector 50 stretches a 40,000 BTU ribbon of flame across four-plus feet of glass, and all of that rising heat hits the same wall your TV or artwork wants to occupy. The wide, shallow format that makes linears look so good in a mountain-modern great room is exactly what makes the wall above them the hottest real estate in the house.

That's not a defect — it's physics, and the manufacturers plan for it. It just means the wall above a linear is never a hang-whatever-you-want zone.

Engineered exceptions and the accessories that tame the heat

Some linears are built for this from the start. The Heat & Glo Cosmo 42 routes heat away from the wall above so a television can be mounted over it per the manual — it's one of the units we point people to when the TV placement is non-negotiable. For other models, manufacturers offer heat-management kits and deflector hoods that redirect the rising heat, and the manual will tell you plainly whether one is required before mounting anything above.

When we install a linear, we ask about the TV before we quote the job. Solving it during installation is easy; solving it after the drywall is finished is a remodel.

Art and finishes feel it before you do

Electronics fail loudly; art fails quietly. Sustained heat yellows varnish, warps stretched canvas, dries and cracks wood frames, and can even discolor paint and shiplap over a season or two of evening fires.
