In Brevard, most outdoor fire features run on propane, and yes — a gas fire pit or outdoor fireplace needs a Transylvania County permit for that buried, outdoor-rated line. Propane adds the regulator and pressures to the licensed, pressure-tested work. A wood-burning fire pit skips the gas permit but still answers to setbacks and local zoning.
Propane country changes the setup
Brevard is propane territory — the mains thin out fast past downtown, and the cabins run on tanks. For an outdoor feature that means the permit covers more than a buried line: the regulator has to be right, the pressures set for the appliance, and the whole run coordinated with the propane supplier who owns the tank. A gas fire pit can pull 60,000 BTU, far more than an indoor log set, so sizing the line off the tank correctly is the difference between a steady flame and a starved one. Timing the dig is half the job up here, and it's the kind of thing a landscaper crew rarely thinks through.
