Do ventless gas fireplaces give off carbon monoxide?
Very little when they're working as designed — vent-free units burn at 99.9% efficiency precisely so combustion byproducts stay at trace levels, and every modern one carries an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts the gas off before a room turns unsafe. But because everything they produce stays in the room, sizing, maintenance, and usage rules matter more here than on any other gas appliance we install.
The room is the vent — that's the whole design
A vent-free fireplace has no flue, so engineers attacked the problem from the other side: burn the gas so completely that there's almost nothing harmful left to exhaust. The Superior VRT4036 we carry is typical — 40,000 BTU, 99.9% efficient, millivolt ignition, ODS included. Trace CO, water vapor, and carbon dioxide go into the room instead of up a pipe. That's why nearly all the heat stays with you, and it's also why a vent-free unit adds noticeable indoor moisture — humidity is a normal combustion byproduct, not a defect.
The rules that keep trace levels trace
Size the unit to the room — vent-free fireplaces have hard Btu limits tied to room volume, and an oversized burner in a small den is exactly how trace emissions stop being trace. They're restricted or prohibited in some applications and jurisdictions, bedrooms and bathrooms in particular, so don't put one there. Treat it as a supplemental heater, not an all-day primary. And keep the burner clean: dust, pet hair, and even candle soot change how the flame burns, which is why an annual tune-up isn't optional on these. A dirty vent-free burner is the one gas appliance where 'I'll get to it next year' genuinely raises your risk.

We sell vent-free honestly: safe when correctly sized, installed, maintained, and used within the rules. But if the room is small, the house is built tight, someone in the family has sensitive lungs, or you want a fire running for hours every evening, we'll usually point you to a sealed direct-vent unit instead — it delivers real heat with zero interaction with your indoor air, and it ends the debate.
