Does a gas fireplace need an annual safety inspection?

Yes — a lot of Arden's fireplaces are gas inserts retrofitted into the open masonry of 1980s and '90s homes in Royal Pines and Skyland, and those sealed units earn an annual inspection every bit as much as a new build. Book the yearly service in late summer, before Buncombe County's cold, to keep that insert heating instead of drafting.

From drafty box to real heater

Arden's established neighborhoods were built with open masonry fireplaces that pull heat out of a room as fast as they make it, and many homeowners have since dropped in a sealed gas insert — the upgrade that turns a tired firebox into a unit that actually heats, commonly 70 percent efficient or better. That insert depends on a correctly sized liner and a clean vent path, so the annual inspection checks both the appliance and the old masonry it vents through. A retrofit is only as good as its yearly upkeep.

What the visit measures

On the unit itself, the once-a-year service tests ignition and the valve, measures thermopile output before it weakens into a no-light, clears the vent termination of the debris a summer leaves, reseats the sealed glass gasket, and corrects any log that's drifted off a burner port — a small shift that makes soot and carbon monoxide. Combustion gets checked so what goes up the vent is what should. Around Biltmore Park's retail and office spaces, the same standard applies to commercial installations, which we service and permit as a licensed gas contractor.

Close, and licensed

Arden sits just 15 minutes south of our Asheville showroom, so tune-ups from $189 are a short trip and anything found gets quoted before we proceed. NFPA and CSIA call for the yearly check. As a licensed gas contractor, we handle the fuel side a mason or showroom legally can't. Call (828) 545-0525 to get on the fall list before it fills.
