Does a gas insert's chimney liner need to be inspected or cleaned?
Yes — inspected yearly, though it rarely needs the heavy cleaning a wood liner does. A gas insert vents through a stainless liner up the old masonry flue, and while gas makes no creosote, that liner still gets an annual check for blockages, corrosion, loose connections at the collar, and debris or nesting at the top. It's part of your annual gas service.
Cleaner than wood, but not hands-off
Because a gas insert burns clean, there's no creosote to scrub out of the liner — that's a real advantage over wood. But 'clean' doesn't mean 'ignore it.'
A gas liner can pick up light soot if the flame starts burning poorly (sooty logs are a service flag, not normal), and the liner itself can rust, collect spider webs and dust, catch debris falling from the cap, or get a bird nest at the termination. Any of that restricts the vent, hurts the draft, and can force a shutdown or spillage.
What the yearly check covers
During annual service the tech inspects the liner's condition and its connection at the insert's flue collar, checks the termination cap up top, and confirms the unit is drafting properly. That happens alongside the core gas service — cleaning the pilot and burner, because spiders and dust clog the pilot assembly over the off-season here every year.
Schedule it late summer or early fall, before you're depending on the fireplace for heat.
When the liner needs more than a look
Pay closer attention if the logs are sooting up (a combustion issue worth diagnosing), if an older aluminum gas liner is corroding, or if the insert was ever installed without a proper full-length liner — something we still find in older mountain homes.
