Older masonry and the Hominy Valley bowl
Out toward Hominy Valley and the Pisgah Highway area — propane country, once you're off the Enka edge — the older homes have genuine masonry chimneys that need the full treatment: crown inspection, breathable sealing, and an eye on the flue. The valley's natural bowl traps air, which is one reason clean-burning sealed appliances are popular here, but it also means a wet, poorly drained chimney doesn't dry fast. Water that soaks in freezes at 2,200 feet and spalls the brick, same as anywhere in the mountains.
