Does a standing pilot fireplace work better in a power outage than electronic ignition?

Yes — a standing pilot (millivolt) fireplace works in a power outage, full stop, no batteries required. The pilot flame heats a thermopile that generates its own tiny voltage to open the gas valve, so household electricity never touches the system. Electronic-ignition fireplaces need power to light unless they have battery backup — and after Helene, that distinction stopped being theoretical in Western North Carolina.

Why a standing pilot doesn't care about the grid

A millivolt fireplace is a closed loop: the always-burning pilot heats a thermopile, the thermopile generates a few millivolts of electricity all by itself, and that trickle is enough to hold the gas valve open when you flip the switch or click the remote. There's no circuit board to fry and no outlet to lose. It's nineteenth-century-simple technology, and that simplicity is exactly the point.

What electronic ignition does when the lights go out

A standard electronic-ignition (IPI) fireplace sparks its pilot electrically every time you call for flame, so no power means no spark and no fire. Manufacturers know this, which is why many units — Napoleon is the standout in our lineup — include battery backup that keeps ignition working through an outage.

One caveat that applies to both systems: blowers run on household power. In an outage, even a lit fireplace loses its fan, so you're down to radiant and natural convection heat. That's another argument for a strong radiant unit if backup heat is the goal.

When Helene took the grid down for days across these mountains, central heat stopped everywhere — furnaces and heat pumps don't run without electricity.
