Does an older home's fireplace and chimney have to be brought up to current code when I add an insert or gas logs?

Marshall's terrain shapes this answer. Adding gas logs or an insert doesn't push your whole house up to code — only the flue for the new appliance has to be right — but on these steep hillside lots and tight downtown buildings, getting a proper flue and good draft is the part that takes real care.

Steep Lots, Tricky Draft

Marshall's homes cling to the hillside, and the revitalized downtown buildings stand narrow and multi-story right against the mountainside. That geography complicates how a chimney routes and how it drafts — a flue boxed against a slope, in the cool damp of the French Broad gorge, doesn't always pull the way an open fireplace let it seem to. When we add a sealed insert, its own correctly sized stainless liner gives predictable draft that the original oversized masonry flue couldn't guarantee on a tight, shaded lot.

Permitting in Madison County

We pull the permit with Madison County and meet the inspector, and as a licensed gas contractor we run and pressure-test the fuel line ourselves — a mason or a general contractor legally can't connect it in North Carolina. The inspection itself is where you get the real answer: we camera the flue for cracks, a failed liner, or a size mismatch, and tell you whether the appliance drops in or the chimney needs work first. It's about 25 minutes north of our Emma Rd showroom.

Grandfathered, With One Exception

The rest of an older Marshall home isn't dragged up to code — a fireplace that was legal when built stays as it is, and only the flue now doing a new job has to meet today's standard. Whatever the inspection turns up is quoted before any work begins, with no mystery charges. Call (828) 545-0525.
