Yes. Every gas fire pit needs an accessible manual shutoff — typically a key valve set into the surround or a nearby ball valve — so you can cut the gas instantly and it's fully off when nobody's watching. Code requires it, and it's the single most important safety piece on any outdoor gas feature.
What a key valve is and where it lives
A key valve is a simple, robust shutoff you operate with a removable key — turn it to start gas flow to the burner, turn it back to stop. On a built-in fire pit it's usually set into the stone or concrete surround; on other installs it's a ball valve within easy reach.
The placement rule is common sense written into code: reachable so you can shut it fast, but far enough from the burner that you're never groping through flame to get to it. We position it where you'll actually use it in a hurry.
Why code insists on it
A fire pit sits outdoors, often unattended, sometimes around kids and pets. The manual shutoff is your guarantee that the gas is genuinely off — not just the flame out with fuel still trickling. On a permanent line we also set a shutoff back at the source, so the pit valve handles daily use and the source valve isolates the whole run for service.
Take the removable key with you and the pit can't be lit by curious hands. That's a real safety feature, not a formality.
