Does high mountain elevation change how a ventless fireplace burns?

A little — Hendersonville's roughly 2,200 feet is high enough that a vent-free burner tuned for sea level can run slightly rich, but here the fuel and the appliance choice matter more. Our retirees mostly want quiet, low-maintenance sealed gas off the Henderson County mains, and that preference happens to sidestep the altitude worry almost entirely.

Why the low-maintenance crowd lands on direct-vent

A lot of Hendersonville buyers are downsizing or retired, and they tell us the same thing: heat at the flip of a switch with nothing to fuss over. Ventless can deliver heat, but it comes with rules — room-size Btu limits, added indoor humidity, an ODS shutoff, and restrictions that keep it out of bedrooms. A sealed direct-vent unit off the natural-gas main asks for none of that attention and doesn't care that you're at 2,200 feet, because its combustion is closed off and vented straight outside. For the Laurel Park and Mountain Home crowd, that's usually the easy call.

The clay-soil wrinkle

Older Main Street homes have a second issue that has nothing to do with air density: Hendersonville's clay-heavy soil settles foundations and stresses aging masonry chimneys, so an open flue may not draft the way it once did. Dropping a ventless log set into a compromised chimney doesn't fix the structure, and at elevation a rich burn only makes odor more noticeable. We inspect the flue before we recommend anything.
