Yes, and Marshall's gorge terrain is unusually good at it. The town is built against the mountainside in the narrow French Broad gorge at 1,648 feet, where cool, damp evening air sinks between steep walls — so on a still night wood smoke from the tight downtown and the hillside homes has almost nowhere to go but sideways and down.
A narrow gorge is a natural smoke trap
The steeper and tighter the terrain, the harder it is for a plume to escape, and Marshall's gorge is about as tight as it gets — a narrow multi-story downtown wedged against the slope, with the river running cool and damp below. Cold air pools between the walls at night and holds whatever's put into it. There's little cross-wind down in the gorge to sweep it clean.
Tight lots complicate the chimney, and the draft
Marshall's steep hillside homes have limited access and cramped lots, which complicates chimney routing and hurts draft — and a fireplace that drafts poorly smokes more. That's exactly the wrong combination in a gorge that already won't clear the air. A sealed direct-vent unit sidesteps the whole problem: it vents out a sidewall on a short run, needs no tall chimney, and makes essentially no visible smoke.
