Does running an electric fireplace on flame-only mode without heat cost much?
No. Flame-only mode is LED lighting and a small drive motor — a tiny fraction of the heater's draw, in the territory of leaving a couple of light bulbs on. Where the electricity actually goes
In heat mode, essentially all of an electric fireplace's draw is the heating element — about 1,500 watts, the ceiling for anything on a standard outlet. Switch the element off and what's left is the light show: LED lamps and a small motor spinning the flicker effect. On modern units that's a load measured in tens of watts, comparable to a lamp and less than most televisions. Run it four hours a night at your utility's residential rate and the math rounds toward nothing — it's the cheapest "fire" you'll ever burn.
