Does the glass on an electric fireplace get hot?
No — the glass on an electric fireplace stays cool or barely warm, because the flame is an LED light show, not combustion. The only hot spot is the heater outlet, a vent where a fan pushes out warmed air, and even that runs closer to a hair dryer than a stovetop. That's why electric is what we recommend for kids' rooms and play spaces.
No fire behind the glass, no heat in the glass
An electric fireplace separates the two jobs a gas unit does in one box. The flame you see is light — LEDs, mirrors, and motion effects projected behind the glass — and light doesn't cook anything. The heat comes from a completely separate electric element with a fan, roughly 5,000 BTU (about 1,500 watts), enough to supplement a room up to around 400 square feet. Because the glass isn't sitting in front of combustion, it never enters burn territory the way gas fireplace glass does — and gas glass runs at several hundred degrees. A child pressing both palms against an electric fireplace mid-flame is a non-event. That is a genuinely different safety category from anything that burns fuel.
The one spot that earns respect
Every electric fireplace has a heater outlet — a vent, usually along the top or bottom of the unit, where the warmed air blows out. It gets hot the way a space heater's grille gets hot: uncomfortable to hold, worth keeping curtains and small fingers away from, but not a one-second-burn surface. Know where yours is and keep it clear.
