Does the type of wood you burn change how much heat you get?

Dense hardwoods like oak, hickory, and locust carry far more heat per load than light softwoods like pine or poplar, because heat comes from wood mass and a cord of oak simply weighs more than a cord of pine. Species also changes how easily the wood lights, how long it burns, and how much creosote it leaves behind.
Denser wood, more heat
The heat in firewood is stored in its physical mass, so the heavier the wood for its size, the more BTUs it holds. That's why a full cord of oak can carry well over a third more heat than the same cord of a light softwood — you're burning more actual wood in the same stacked volume.
This is why hardwood is the coin of the realm for real heating. It burns slower and steadier, holds coals longer, and gets you through a mountain night without constant reloading.

Around Western North Carolina, the top-tier heat woods are oak, hickory, and locust — dense, long-burning, and worth seasoning properly. Maple, ash, and cherry sit in a solid middle. Poplar, pine, and other softwoods light fast and burn quick but leave you feeding the stove.
That doesn't make softwood useless. It's excellent kindling and fine for a quick shoulder-season fire when you want a short, bright burn rather than all-night heat. Match the wood to the job.
The catch that beats species
Here's the honest part: the finest oak in the world burns poorly if it's wet. Moisture content trumps species every time — a well-seasoned softwood will out-heat green hardwood any day, because green wood spends its energy boiling off water instead of warming your room.
