Does WNC's mountain elevation affect how a gas fireplace performs?
A little, yes. Thinner mountain air means slightly less oxygen for combustion, so at higher elevations a gas fireplace's heat output can drop a bit and the burner may need tuning to keep the flame clean. Draft is also touchier up here. At typical WNC elevations most units run fine as-is; it's the highest sites where setup matters.
Thinner air, a little less punch
Air gets less dense as you climb, so there's marginally less oxygen feeding the flame. Practically, that can shave a bit off a gas fireplace's rated heat output at elevation and, if the unit isn't set up for the altitude, tip the flame toward a lazy, sooty burn. Most of the Asheville basin sits around 2,000-plus feet, where standard units perform well. Climb toward Cashiers, Highlands, or a high ridge and the effect grows — which is where getting the setup right earns its keep. Propane, which many high-elevation cabins run, burns hotter per unit and needs the correct orifice and pressure to begin with.
Draft is the bigger mountain factor
Honestly, altitude's direct hit on heat is small next to what our terrain does to draft. A cold flue at elevation acts like a plug of dense cold air a fire has to push past to get going; our ridges, valleys, and tall trees throw downdrafts that shove air back down the chimney. That's why direct-vent gas fireplaces are so popular up here — sealed combustion, a short coaxial vent out a sidewall, and no tall chimney to fight. They shrug off the draft problems that nag open masonry fireplaces on a windy mountain lot.
