Electric fireplace vs a small direct-vent gas fireplace for an ADU or tiny home — which makes sense?
Clyde's older 1960s-to-'80s ranch homes are prime candidates for a fireplace upgrade, and when that upgrade is a new ADU or in-law suite, the cold Haywood nights usually make it a heat question — pointing to a small direct-vent gas unit. Electric still fits a tight comfort studio, but it's supplemental warmth that quits in an outage.
Ranch-home additions and how the fireplace should work
A lot of Clyde's ranch-era houses came with dated, decorative fireboxes, so owners adding an accessory space tend to want the new fireplace to actually heat. In a compact ADU a small direct-vent gas unit does exactly that — sealed combustion, modulating output, real radiant warmth — rather than the token flame the old box gave. It vents out a sidewall with no chimney, which keeps a new tight build simple. Fuel here is mixed: some gas, plenty of propane, and either feeds the same unit.
The valley is hard on chimneys — sealed is smarter
Clyde shares the cold-air drainage of Canton and Waynesville, and the river humidity rusts dampers and degrades masonry chimneys faster than folks expect. That's a strong argument for a chimney-free direct-vent install in any new ADU: nothing up top to weather, sealed combustion, a short vent run. If it's propane, we size the regulator and orifice for LP, permit with Haywood County, and pressure-test before it lights. At this elevation the heating season is long, so size the unit for genuine output.
The electric case
If the studio is small, well-sealed, and already heated, a Dimplex electric is the simplest, cheapest flame going — a plug, no service, a few hundred dollars. Accept that it's supplemental near 5,000 BTU and dark in an outage, which up here you feel. Comfort accent, electric; dependable mountain heat, gas.
