For an older home with an unlined or deteriorating chimney, is a gas insert with a liner or ventless logs the safer fix?
Few places we serve have older chimneys than Flat Rock, where homes date to the 1800s with oversized open fireplaces and aging clay liners — so the gas insert with a stainless liner is clearly the safer fix. It re-vents that historic chimney without tearing it out. Ventless logs skip the flue but add moisture, limit room size, and stay out of bedrooms.
Preserving a 19th-century chimney, safely
Historic Flat Rock's original masonry chimneys were built for wood and open flame, with clay liners that have spent a century and a half cracking, shifting, and shedding. You don't have to demolish that character to make it safe. We slide a correctly sized stainless liner down the existing chase and seal a gas insert to it — the historic brick stays exactly as it looks, but it's no longer what stands between combustion gases and your framing.
It fixes the draft, too
Those oversized open hearths don't just risk a bad flue; they pull cold air down into the room and send household heat straight up the chimney. A sealed insert closes that loop — it stops the draft and actually produces heat instead of losing it. Ventless logs would heat as well, but adding moisture to an old house and leaving the aging chimney unaddressed makes them the weaker choice for a home you intend to keep for generations.
On the gas main, permitted in Henderson County
