For an older home with an unlined or deteriorating chimney, is a gas insert with a liner or ventless logs the safer fix?

In Marshall, tight mountainside lots and gorge downdrafts make chimney draft unreliable — which is why the sealed gas insert with a liner is the safer fix over ventless logs, and sometimes a direct-vent unit is better still. A liner gives the old flue a sealed, correctly sized path. Ventless logs skip venting but add moisture, cap by room size, and stay out of bedrooms.

Draft is the hard part here

Marshall's homes cling to steep hillsides, and the narrow downtown is built right against the mountain along the French Broad gorge — terrain that causes downdrafts and makes a natural chimney draft temperamental. A sealed gas insert on a properly sized liner is far less at the mercy of that than an open fireplace. And if the old chimney's routing is truly problematic, a direct-vent unit can go straight out a sidewall — no chimney needed at all, which on some of these lots is the cleaner fix.

Where ventless doesn't help

Ventless logs sidestep the draft problem by not venting, and in a drafty older Marshall house they're tolerated better than in tight new construction. But tolerated isn't the same as safer: they add humidity to the damp gorge air, they're capped by room size, and they leave a deteriorating chimney to keep weathering. A sealed insert or direct-vent unit solves the draft and the flue at once.

Access and the permit

These steep, limited-access lots take some planning to work — we scout the approach as part of the visit. Marshall is mixed-fuel, so we confirm gas versus propane, pull the Madison County permit, and pressure-test the line. We're 25 minutes north. Call (828) 545-0525.
