Start with how people will sit. For a typical backyard gathering of four to six, a fire pit around 36 to 44 inches across on the outside — with roughly a 24 to 30-inch fire opening — hits the sweet spot: big enough to be the centerpiece, not so big it swallows the patio. Plan on seats set back about 3 feet from the edge, both for comfort and to keep legs and feet clear of the heat. Bigger crowds want a larger pit or a linear table so no one's left out of the warmth.

Shape follows the space

A round pit is the classic conversation piece and works when seating wraps all the way around. A fire table earns its place on a smaller patio because it doubles as a surface for drinks and plates. A long, linear pit or fire table suits a bench, a wall of seating, or the edge of an outdoor kitchen. On a tight balcony or narrow deck, a compact bowl or table beats forcing in something oversized. Traffic flow around the pit matters as much as the diameter. Leave a clear walking path around whatever you choose.

Clearances and fuel come first

Before we settle on a size, we check the practical limits: distance from the house, railings, roof overhangs, and anything combustible, plus how the gas will reach it. Outdoor fire features run on an outdoor-rated, typically buried gas line — propane in the Fairview and Candler cabins, natural gas along the Asheville and Hendersonville mains — and that's licensed work we permit and pressure-test. Getting those setbacks right at the design stage saves tearing up finished hardscape later.
