How close to the property line or a fence can I put a fire pit?
In Black Mountain, the fence is rarely the only combustible thing near your fire — the heavily wooded lots toward Montreat and up the Swannanoa Valley put trees, low limbs, and leaf litter into the picture too. Hold the common ten feet from the property line and any fence, Buncombe County sets the code, and give the flame the same respect around anything that burns.
Wooded lots widen the safety question
Around Black Mountain, and especially up in Montreat, houses sit under heavy tree cover on shaded, moisture-holding lots. The property-line setback is only half the job here — a fire pit tucked against the line might clear the neighbor by ten feet and still sit under a low canopy or beside a bed of dry leaves. We look at the whole envelope: distance to the line and any fence, clearance overhead to branches, and what's on the ground around the base. A gas pit helps, because it throws no drifting embers into that leaf litter the way an open wood fire does.
Gas, and the valley's cold-air mornings
Black Mountain is on the natural-gas mains, so we can usually run a permanent line rather than site a propane tank near your fence. The Swannanoa Valley also runs its own weather — cold air pools here, and mornings can be ten to fifteen degrees colder than Asheville — which is part of why outdoor fire features get used hard through the shoulder seasons. Connecting the gas is licensed work; a mason can build a beautiful surround but can't legally make it burn in NC. We can, and we permit and pressure-test the line.
