There's no single correct length, but a linear fireplace generally looks best spanning roughly a third to half of the wall it lives on. On a common 12-to-14-foot great-room wall, that lands you around a 42- to 50-inch unit — big enough to command the room, not so big it fights the furniture and the TV above it. Go much shorter and the fireplace looks lost on the wall; go much longer and the proportions feel off. Stand back, picture the flame centered where the room's sightlines land, and let the wall guide you.
Measure the whole opening, not just the fireplace
The unit's listed length isn't the hole in your wall. A 50-inch linear fireplace needs framing wider than 50 inches, plus whatever surround — tile, stacked stone, steel — you're wrapping around it.
