How do I design a two-story fireplace wall under a cathedral ceiling?

Treat the whole two-story wall as one composition: run a continuous material — stacked stone, tile, or plaster — from floor to peak so the height reads as a feature, not empty space. Place the fireplace at human scale near the bottom, then let the material carry the eye up. A wide or linear unit holds the wall; a tall chimney breast or a floor-to-ceiling stone field balances the volume.

Fill the height, don't fight it

A cathedral ceiling gives you a dramatic two-story wall — and an easy way to get it wrong is to hang a normal fireplace and mantel low and leave a huge blank expanse above. The fix is to design the full height as one continuous element. Carry stacked stone, large-format tile, or a limewash-plaster finish from the hearth all the way to the peak so the wall becomes the architecture. In timber-frame and mountain-modern homes around Cashiers, Lake Toxaway, and Brevard, a soaring stone chimney breast is the signature move, and it earns every inch.

Sizing the fireplace to the volume

The fireplace itself still lives at human scale — roughly eye level and below — but it needs enough presence not to get swallowed. A wider unit or a linear fireplace holds its own on a tall wall where a small square box would look lost. Ground the base with a strong mantel or a raised hearth bench, then break up the tall field with intent — a change in stone coursing, a timber mantel beam, sconces at a landing height — so the upper wall has rhythm instead of being a flat sheet.

Two-story walls raise real questions: venting a gas unit up through the structure, clearances where a wood mantel meets a hot linear firebox, and how you'll ever change a bulb or dust a ledge two stories up.
